Killeen Fire Department has activated the Medic 9 ambulance and will return the Medic 22 ambulance to reserve status effective April 19.
Medic 22 is a second ambulance stationed at Central Fire Station. It was placed into active service temporarily to provide emergency response prior to the opening of Fire Station 9 and the activation of its ambulance, Medic 9.
Fire Station 9 opened March 6, and the personnel that had been supporting the operation of Medic 22 moved to the new station. In order to facilitate the transition of Medic 9 into service, Medic 22 remained in service for approximately six weeks subject to a tiered overtime reduction system.
The activation of Medic 9 and deactivation of Medic 22 maintains the City’s eight front-line ambulances. Placing Medic 22 in reserve status allows it to be used to maintain service levels when any of the active ambulances is down for service or repair.
To maintain Medic 22 as a ninth ambulance, personnel would have to be hired using overtime. Fire Department overtime funding will not support this expense.
