Community Walk Against Domestic Violence on Oct. 2

The Killeen Police Department hosts first of its kind event on Saturday

The Killeen Police Department will be joined by Mayor Jose Segarra and council members for a Community Walk Against Domestic Violence next Saturday, Oct. 2.

The event will be at Lions Club Park from 11a.m. - 2p.m. and is free and open to the public. Mayor Segarra will present a proclamation and help bring awareness and support to victims and survivors of domestic violence.

The event will consist of a one-mile education walk, along with food and music. Attendees are encouraged to wear purple or a fun costume to show their support.

Along with the Killeen Police Department and the mayor, the Killeen Fire Department, Families in Crisis, Fort Hood’s Victim Advocacy Program, and more community partners will join the event.

October is observed as Domestic Violence Awareness Month annually as a call to action to recognize the issue, understand the impacts and break the cycle. It is estimated that nearly ten million men and women are physically abused by a partner each year and in Texas, 35% of men and women experience some form of domestic violence in their lifetime.

The COVID-19 pandemic has added an additional layer on domestic violence and highlighted challenges and needs not seen before, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

The Killeen Police Department and the City of Killeen believe that together, we can end domestic violence. For questions or event information, please contact KPD’s Kimberly Isett at (254) 501-7698.
