PSA released, manual and automatic flushing is required to maintain good water quality

KILLEEN, Texas (Oct. 17, 2022) – The City of Killeen’s Department of Public Works has released new information and a public service announcement video regarding its hydrant flushing across the city.

Last week, Water and Sewer crews increased their flushing in certain locations through fire hydrants and automatic flushing units. The City of Killeen thanks the community for helping keep the water supply and quality at optimum levels for this time of year and throughout the drought.

“Due to the cooler weather and good citizen response to the Stage 1 voluntary water reduction, water demand has decreased considerably throughout the city,” Jeff Reynolds, Executive Director of Public Works said on Oct. 11. “To maintain good water quality during these lower demands, flushing is required in specific locations to keep the water flowing throughout the entire water distribution system.”

Before today, our area had gone nearly 40 days without rainfall, and nearly 50 days since receiving more than a quarter of an inch of rain.

Today the City released a public service announcement to explain why the flushing is required. The City of Killeen has about 600 dead ends throughout our water distribution system and the City uses fire hydrants and manual and automatic flushers to maintain the quality of water and help remove mineral and sediment buildup, as well as ensure the fire hydrants are working properly to maintain pressure and flow.

The flushing is a requirement by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to ensure we deliver the highest-quality water possible to residents.

Residents with questions can contact our Water and Sewer division at (254) 501-6500.
