KILLEEN, Texas (January 18, 2024) – Killeen has again been recognized for its growth and affordability, being named the most affordable, fastest growing city in the United States by GoBankingRates.com.
The rankings were based off a study of the latest American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau, identifying the 200 biggest cities in terms of total population. It then analyzed these cities based on their population changes in recent years, the median household income, the average rent, the average home values and overall cost of living, comparing 2022 data to 2021.
The findings showed Killeen had a typical home value of $225,885 and a 5-year growth rate of 9.39%. It showed the cost of living in Killeen at just 83.7% of the national average.
This is the fifth study in less than a year’s time touting Killeen as one of the top cities to live.
A study from financial advising group SmartAsset ranked Killeen’s housing market as the best in the nation for first-time home builders and ranked Killeen as the 8th most moved to city in the nation in 2022. Texas Real Estate Source data ranked Killeen second in the state for lowest cost of living. And finally, a study by Wallet Hub last fall ranked Killeen as the ninth most affordable college town in the nation, comparing it with 415 cities. Additionally, FinanceBuzz ranked Killeen as one of five best Texas cities to retire on a budget of $1,500 a month.
“Killeen continues to be a place citizens of all ages want to live, learn and grow,” Kent Cagle, Killeen City Manager, said. “As we chip away at accomplishing items on our Killeen 2040 Comprehensive Plan, this information is more proof that we are moving our city forward and focusing in the right direction.”
