Emergency and road crews continue to be on standby throughout winter weather event
KILLEEN, Texas (Feb. 3, 2022) – As the winter weather continues to provide dangerous conditions, all City of Killeen offices and entities will remain closed on Friday, Feb. 4.
Residents are urged to stay off the roads and use extreme caution, maintaining a safe distance between themselves and other cars if they must be on the roadways.
There have been several vehicle spin-outs on the slick roads and about a dozen traffic accidents, but there have been no reports of major issues during this winter weather event. Residents are reminded to keep their pets indoors during these freezing temperatures.
The Killeen Fire Department will keep their booster trucks in operation, which are safer on the roads in these conditions. Our Transportation staff has had all five sand trucks on the roadways and 80 tons of sand have been delivered. All flights at the Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport are canceled today. Please check the status for tomorrow if you’re traveling.
The N WS Young bridge has been closed for the entire day, due to icing, and will be reassessed for opening tomorrow. The intersection at WS Young Drive and Rancier Avenue has been in flash mode and the City’s traffic technicians will work to fix the issue.
The City has Water and Sewer staff monitoring our water system in several locations in case there are any emergency shutoffs needed. Additional employees are also assisting with incoming phone calls and prepared to respond to any water main break if necessary.
As a reminder, the city will open a warming center again tonight. The center locations and hours are as follows:
- Thursday-Friday, Feb. 3-4, 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., Moss Rose Center (1103 E Ave. E), dinner will be served at 6 p.m.
- Saturday, Feb. 5, 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., Rosa Hereford Community Center (2201 E. Veterans Memorial Boulevard)
Emergency personnel will remain on full staff. Residents are asked to use the Police non-emergency line when possible at (254) 501-8800, and use 911 in case of an emergency. City staff is closely watching the system and we will continue to provide updates of any impact to city services on our website (killeentexas.gov and clicking on the Winter Weather banner) and social media outlets.
