The City of Killeen will host its twelfth annual GIS Day Friday at Mayborn Science Theater and Planetarium at Central Texas College from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event is not open to the public, but media is encouraged to attend.
More than 300 third, fourth and fifth grade students from Venable Village Elementary, Peebles Elementary, Clifton Park Elementary and St. Joseph Catholic School will rotate through classrooms that have been transformed into interactive geography zones for a day of hands on learning. Designed to show students practical applications for geographic information systems (GIS), the event will feature displays by groups that employ GIS in their daily operations. Participants include the city’s Information Technology and GIS Department, Central Texas College Drafting and Design Department, representatives from Fort Hood, Texas Alliance for Geographic Education, the City of Harker Heights, the Central Texas Council of Governments and the Mayborn Planetarium.
