A unique new amenity for some very special residents will officially open to the public Saturday at noon when the Greater Killeen Lions Foundation Special Needs Playground is dedicated at Lions Club Park. The public is invited.
Public-private partnership brings this inclusive playground to the community. Greater Killeen Lions Foundation and Lions Club International each provided $40,000 towards the project, and the City of Killeen provided a matching $80,000.
“This is the first playground of its kind in Killeen, and we’re very proud to add it to our park system,” said Executive Director of Community Services Brett Williams. “Combining City and non-profit resources allowed us to double the scope of the project and bring a bigger and better playground to the community.”
The new playground is fully accessible for all ability levels. It offers shaded structures, ADA swing structures and spinning, climbing and balance beam structures.
The new special needs playground is situated near two existing playgrounds and joins other park amenities which include pavilions, a hike and bike trail, baseball, softball and multi-purpose fields and a basketball court. Lions Club Park is also home to the Family Recreation Center, Family Aquatics Center and Lions Club Park Senior Center.
