Killeen Animal Services Shares New Year’s Resolutions for Future Pet Owners

KILLEEN, Texas (Jan. 12, 2026) – As the new year begins, Killeen Animal Services is encouraging residents to consider resolutions that extend beyond personal goals and focus on making a meaningful difference in the lives of animals in need.

Adopting a pet offers an opportunity to begin the year with purpose, compassion and companionship, while giving an animal a second chance at a loving home. To support those considering adoption in the new year, Killeen Animal Services is sharing several resolutions for prospective pet owners:

Be part of the solution. Nearly 6,000 animals enter the Killeen Animal Center each year, many through no fault of their own. Choosing to adopt from a local shelter gives an animal a second chance and supports lifesaving efforts in your community.

Be committed. Bringing a pet home is a lifelong promise. Future pet owners should consider their lifestyle, schedule, and ability to provide consistent care, training and affection.

Be patient. Remember, every pet adjusts at its own pace. Future pet owners should allow time for trust and routine to develop to help build a lasting bond.

Be proactive about health and well-being. Future pet owners should establish a prevention routine with regular veterinary checkups, up-to-date vaccinations, balanced nutrition, daily exercise and parasite prevention. Taking these steps helps ensure a healthy, happy companion for years to come.

Be compassionate.  Whether you choose to adopt, foster, or volunteer in the new year, every act of kindness helps create a more humane community.

“Killeen Animal Services is here to support future pet owners through every step,” said Amanda Moore, director of Killeen Animal Services. “The new year is an opportunity to make a meaningful commitment, and few resolutions are as rewarding as welcoming a companion animal into your home.”

The Killeen Animal Center, located at 3518 E. Rancier Ave., is open for pet adoptions Wednesday through Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. More information on adoptable pets and adoption requirements is available at KilleenTexas.gov/Animals
